West Wulf is a community page for West Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire, and the internet home of the AFC Wulfrunians supporters group. AFC Wulfrunians are a West Midlands (Regional) Premier League club based in Castlecroft, Wolverhampton. The 2011/12 season saw them finish 5th in the league, win the WMRL League Cup against local rivals Wednesfield, and finalists of the J W Hunt Cup where they lost to Black Country Rangers at Molineux. Their home ground is the 500 seater Castlecroft Stadium, on Castlecroft Road in the leafy western border of Wolverhampton.
The aim of this website is to bring the local community together during these harsh financial times, and to foster support of a local football club. Many people can't afford to spend £30 a ticket and another £20 on food and drink to watch a Premiership or NPower Championship match - making non-league football such as this an affordable and fun alternative. HistoryAFC Wulfrunians is a relatively new club, formed in 2005 - but as an offshoot of Old Wulfrunians who were formed back in 1922 (as Wolverhampton Grammar School Old Boys FC). AFC Wulfrunians consequently share the same badge as Old Wulfrunians - that of Wolverhampton Grammar school.
Wulfs joined the West Midlands (Regional) League in 2005, progressing through two divisions to reach the WMRL Premier Division in 2008. Wulfs won the championship at the climax of the 2008 / 09 season, though did not get promoted to the Midlands Alliance as the stadium was, at that time just purchased and not up to the required standard for the Midlands Alliance. The previous two seasons - 2009 / 10 and 2010 / 11 both resulted in third place finishes. AFC Wulfrunians are the current J W Hunt Cup holders, having beaten Gornal Athletic 3 - 0 in the 2010 / 11 final on 13th May 2011. 'Wulfrunian' - what does it mean?
A 'Wulfrunian' is the name given to a native of Wolverhampton. The place name 'Wolverhampton' is believed to derive from 'Wulfrūnehēantūn' - the high enclosure of 'Wulfrun', Wulfrun being Lady Wulfrun, who King Æthelred granted lands to as part of a Royal Charter in the year 985. The personal name 'Wulfrun' itself is Wulf = Wolf and run = rune / secret.
